Hopey-Changey-ism

Forget all that crap about serving the "people," protecting the Constitution, and such. Bush's real "Job" --the reason he was installed-- was
To "Disempower" the People -- and finish the job Raygun began:
To gut the Constitution,
To attack the infrastructures of justice and fairness, public health and safety, and
To facilitate the Corporat take-over of the public's political and economic 'commons.'
On the other hand, Obama's job is to make the ("white") People forget how much they hated and distrusted the Busheviks, and to assume the burden of those emotions onto himself (and the Dims), thereby preparing the way for the next wave of Puke theo-fascism. Given his ethnicity, he's already close to half-way there, as the tea-party/birther/tenther/gun-loon/FauxNooz (Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh) wacktardity has clearly already shown...

This has the additional "benefit" (for the Owners) of depriving any further "minority" candidate for high national office any oxygen for a possible campaign.

I thought it was sheer genius for the Owners to schedule the worst economic collapse of the past three/quarters of a Century, right at the intersection of a retreating, embarrassed, beseiged GOP hierarchy and in-coming Democratic one which would handily absorb the blame...

Fuuking BRILLIANT!

White Privilege

Tim Wise explains it all for you: Layers upon layers upon layers of privilege. It takes about an hour, but you'll get the point in the first 15 minutes: Even if your family never owned slaves, if you are "white," you--and likely an ancestor or two--have had advantages that were denied to "people of color."

White folks hate to hear this message.

Anti-abortionist Supporters of Murder

You cannot make this shit up: Anti-abortionists are having a "bake" sale--a raffle, including an Army of God field manual and a prison cookbook--to raise money for Scott Roeder, the man who shot and killed Wichita (KS) doctor George Tiller earlier this year. Neiwert quotes a KC Star story:
An Army of God manual. A prison cookbook compiled by a woman doing time for abortion clinic bombings and arsons. An autographed bullhorn.

These are among the items that abortion foes plan to auction on eBay and other Web sites in a fundraiser for Scott Roeder, the Kansas City man charged with killing Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller.

“This is unique,” said Regina Dinwiddie, a Kansas City anti-abortion activist who will sign the bullhorn. “Nobody’s ever done this before. The goal is that everybody makes money for Scott Roeder’s defense.”

One abortion-rights leader called the auction deplorable and said it could lead to more violence.

“The network of extremists promoting and defending the murder of doctors is contributing to escalating threats against clinics and doctors across the country,” said Kathy Spillar, executive vice president of the Feminist Majority Foundation.

Roeder, charged with first-degree murder in the May 31 shooting of Tiller, is scheduled to go to trial in January.

Really! David Neiwert at C&L put up the story yesterday.

Rachel Maddow discusses this with attorneys for Tiller's family, who are resolved that any funds raised in Roeder's name be confiscated and dedicated to victims of similar crimes:

Evan Bayh: Smarmy. Scummy. Sleezy. Slimy. Sneaky. Shitty. Skeevy, In The Same Dwarf!

Here's how you make LOTS and LOTS of money while "serving" your country in the Wworld's Greatest Deliberative Body": Conflict of interest.

NO, silly. Your hands are clean. But your wife sits on the boards of, and receives stock options in compensation from corpoRats whose business comes before you in your official capacities.

Smart.

Scummy. Sleezy. Slimy. Sneaky. Shitty. Skeevy.

But SMART!

From Rick Ungar, via Mike's Roundup on C&L:
Yesterday’s post here at The Policy Page described Senator Evan Bayh’s huge conflict of interest in the health care reform debate. As the Democratic Senator likely to represent the 60th procedural vote that could block a Republican filibuster of a reform bill, I discussed how profoundly disturbing it is that Senator’s Bayh’s wife, Susan, sits on the board of directors of WellPoint – the nation’s largest (by membership) for profit health insurance company. I also noted that Mrs. Bayh’s currently held stock options in the company – which would likely take a significant financial hit should a public option succeed – represent a significant percentage of the family’s net worth.

While the piece garnered some readers here at True/Slant, I continue to be surprised by how little coverage this matter is receiving from the national media. While the subject has popped up, from time to time, we now know just how important Sen. Bayh’s vote is likely to be and how much this clear conflict of interest could weigh on the result. Still, the mainstream media remains remarkably silent on this, including the more liberal skewing news organizations.

Why is Bayh getting a pass?

Is the silence due to a presumption that, as a finalist on the Obama vice-presidential short list, Bayh must be a progressive Democrat who should not be picked on? He ‘s not.

Is it the boyish good looks that leads to a conclusion that a face like that could never be guilty of bad behavior? He is. (see the 1997 report, “Judicial Watch Files Complaint against Indiana Senator Evan Bayh with Senate Ethics Committee.”) This complaint involved Bayh’s failure to disclose his position as a director of his family foundation.
Bayh gives proof to the allegation that NO reasonably corrupt, compliant, complicit piece-of-shit glad-hander EVER left Congress less well-off than when they arrived.

Evan Bayh has the distinction, it seems to me, of being JUST the guy to make Joe Lieberman look like an honest broker.

Waydago!

Lord Brian Griffiths of Fforestfach (and Goldman Sachs) says his paychecks make you rich.

He lies in his decaying, ennobled Thatcherite teeth, of course. Justin Fox, at Times "Curious Capitalist" blog reports:
I get the feeling that Brian Griffiths' words at a panel discussion in London Tuesday might go down in history as some kind of let-them-eat-cakish landmark. Said the economist, a former Margaret Thatcher adviser who was raised to the peerage in 1991 and has been helping make ends meet since then by toiling away as a vice chairman (read: guy who participates in panel discussions and stuff) of Goldman Sachs International:
We have to tolerate the inequality as a way to achieve greater prosperity and opportunity for all
.
Griffiths is of course right that at some level there is a tradeoff between inequality and prosperity. The prospect of making more money than others gives us incentives to work harder, to take more risks, to be more inventive—all of which makes the economy grow much faster than it would if we were all perfectly equal, financially speaking. And the presence of large pools of money in private hands enables valuable investment and philanthropy.
But the argument that ever-growing inequality will make us ever more prosperous really doesn't hold up. Neither does the more specific argument—to take Griffiths' statement in context—that gigantic paychecks at Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street and City firms are good for the rest of us. I don't know that there's any incontrovertible proof that they're bad for the rest of us, either, but the standard Wall Street credo that its people get paid so much because the work they do is of such great value to society doesn't seem so convincing these days.
A commentor on the site puts Justin to "rights":
Among the thriving, prosperous countries of the world, more-equal countries grow faster:
http://www.asymptosis.com/wealth-equality-and-prosperity.html

Ditto for countries with more-progressive taxation:
http://www.asymptosis.com/want-prosperity-tax-the-rich.html

And those countries provide more opportunity for talented people to climb the ladder and make everyone more prosperous.
http://www.asymptosis.com/republicans-create-opportunity-yeah-right.html
Also worthy of note: Nations whose women experience the greatest freedoms--reproductive, political, economic, etc.--also thrive better than those in which women are kept as chattel.

Bad News For The Surviving Atomic Zygotes

This is gonna give the term "Boomers" a whole new meaning. Yesterday, at Politics Daily, there was posted a somber, sobering reminder for the first generation of Atomic Zygotes (among whom I am on the absolute FOREFRONT, in fact perhaps naming the cadre by my own conception, in Santa Fe, on or about July 16, 1945, the date of the Trinity blast, 135 miles south of my parents connubial doings, while my father was home on leave from the destroyer Navy in the Pacific; a little after he rejoined his ship, the war was over--but I digress):

Remember back in the "good old days," when the US, and the Soviets were practicing national, chest-thumping machismo and testing nukes in the atmosphere? Remember Strontium 90? Iodine 129? Caesium 137? They're Baaaaaack...:
Even with a half-century's hindsight, the U.S. government's willingness to risk the health of the nation's children seems somewhere between unfathomable and unconscionable.

Between 1951 and 1962, the Atomic Energy Commission detonated more than 100 nuclear bombs in the atmosphere over its Nevada Test Site, just 65 miles from Las Vegas. The radioactive fallout menaced not only the ranchers and the miners unlucky enough to live in that remote area of southern Nevada, but -- as a new study unveiled Tuesday demonstrated -- untold millions of unsuspecting Americans as well.

The winds carried Strontium-90, Iodine-129 and other lethal particles across a broad swath of the country. Infants who were bottle-fed, which was then considered the modern approach, were particularly vulnerable to the Strontium-90 that ended up in cows' milk.

In 1961, as John Kennedy was poised to resume atmospheric testing after a two-year moratorium, he met with White House science adviser Jerome Wiesner in the Oval Office one rainy day. The president wondered how fallout reached the earth. Wiesner explained that it was washed out of the clouds by rain. "You mean," Kennedy asked, "it's in the rain out there?" As Wiesner tells it, the president then "looked out the window, looked very sad and didn't say a word for several minutes." Nonetheless JFK, fearful that the Soviet Union might score a nuclear breakthrough, authorized a new round of above-ground testing before negotiating the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 1963. (N.B. The Soviets exploded nearly equal numbers of tests in Siberia, where the prevailing winds swept the debris westerly into Alaska and the west coast of the USofA. --W)

With Nov. 9, 2009 marking the 20th anniversary of the breaching of the Berlin Wall, Cold War retrospectives are again in season. But the grim legacy of nuclear testing is apt to be lost amid the memories of Josef Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, the Berlin airlift, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Ronald Reagan's famed exhortation at the Brandenburg Gate. The mushroom clouds over the Nevada desert seem so long ago, so devoid of any real-world consequences.

But a study released Tuesday documents the enhanced cancer risk that Baby Boomers face because of these long-ago atmospheric tests. Epidemiologist Joseph Mangano analyzed the lingering radiation in infant teeth (donated long ago by the parents of baby boys born in the St. Louis area between 1959 and 1961) and compared the results to contemporary cancer data from the subjects. "What we found out was shocking," Mangano said. "Persons who had died of cancer had more than double the Strontium-90 in their (baby) teeth than did healthy persons." The original variance in Strontium-90 levels among individuals, he explained, was caused by seemingly small factors such as how much milk expectant mothers drank, diet and the source of the municipal water supply.

So where did these teeth come from? In the late 1950s, researchers at Washington University in St. Louis collected teeth from about 300,000 children and chemically analyzed them to demonstrate the prevalence of nuclear fallout. Even though it contributed to public support for the Test Ban Treaty, the Washington University study had been all but forgotten. But in 2001 a biology professor at the university discovered 85,000 left-over teeth in tiny manila envelopes that had never been used in this Cold War research.

The 53-year-old Mangano, the executive director of the small anti-nuclear Radiation and Public Health Project, saw the potential to use these teeth to conduct a longitudinal study measuring the life-long effects from atmospheric testing. For reasons of simplicity and consistency, he initially limited himself to boys born during a two-year moratorium in testing (so only lingering fallout was measured) who had not been breast-fed. "This is the pay dirt right here," he said excitedly Tuesday. "All the 50 years of collecting teeth, discussing bombs tests and all, this is the payoff. The difference is statistically significant." Mangano's paper, which is slated to posted Wednesday on his organization's Web site, has been submitted to an academic journal where it will be subjected to peer review.
Hooray! The Null Hypothesis has been rejected! Statistical significance is the Grail of soi-disant 'empirical' research--number crunching. We have significance! Everyone and everything anywhere in the world since 1945 carries the poisonous traces of these hideous "experiments" ("My mushroom cloud is bigger than yours. Nyanyah!").

So, while the news would extol the successes of the latest "tests," we did weekly 'civil defense drills.' I still recall those horriffic moments in school when we--six- and seven- and eight-year-olds--desperately grabbed for the thickest book we could lift and dove under our desks and, down on all fours, with our tiny, quaking, puckered little asses tilted heavenward, we covered our heads with those books, to ward off the imminent nuclear blast.

Literally giving our sweet, young, virgin asses to GAWD!

But it was later, when it rained, that it literally rained death and destruction, especially if you were downwind--though eventually it didn't matter where you were.

The REAL "Enemies List"

Rupert Murdoch's cabloid Orcs--Hannity, O'Reilly, & Beck, e.g.--are all in a snit because the Obama regime is calling 'em out as the seditious assholes they are. Stung apparently by the criticism, the Orcs of Faux Nooz are accusing Obama of reviving that old Nixonian trick, the "enemies list." (Intriguing, innit, that when the Cretino-fascists need to revile someone, they compare the object of their derision with a criminal, despised, discreditied GOPuke? Just askin'.)

But the REAL "enemies" of the State are not the morons dribbling bile and resentment at Faux Nooz. Not at all. The REAL enemies are these guys:
Hank Paulson, Tim Geithner, Ben Bernanke, Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, Alan Greenspan, Lloyd Blankfein, Jamie Dimon, John Mack, Vikram Pandit, John Thain, Hank Greenberg, Ken Lewis.
Any or all of them, of course, could perish or disappear tomorrow and any and all would/could be instantaneously replaced from the ranks ot the loyal CorpoRats. It is not people who perpetuate institutions, benign or corrupt; each has its own internal grammar and syntax by which the intentionality of the beast is perpetuated (cf., e.g., Foucault, in The Archeology of Knowledge, on the making and maintenance of "discursive formations" and their relations with 'power.')

According to a piece today up on The Public Record, the men named herein constituted a "Wall Street Economic Hit Squad," targeting democracy-supporting regulation of the financial "markets":
These men ‘presided over the largest transfer of wealth in history, from the working class to the flamboyant super rich.’ What these men have done is obscene. After crashing the economy, trillions, literally trillions of dollars have been funneled into the pockets of a select few, in secrecy, while billions of people suffer in poverty, billions suffer to survive. This small tight-knit Wall Street cadre has committed a crime against humanity.
": Since 1980, this crew of vultures has presided over the destruction of the "...the American middle class, once the only effective counter weight to Wall Street greed...Over 25 million people, in what was the US middle class, are now in full-blown crisis mode and urgently need to increase their income."

The problems began, of course, when the GOP/Regan(stet) regime determined it would be more cheaper and profitable--and more encumbering upon the people--to provide workers with easier access to credit than to raise the wages of American workers, whose shopping fueled the American--and the World's--economy. So, while Murkin workers pumped up the productivity curve to heights never before imagined, they were effectively becoming more and more indentured to the CorpoRat State.

"Some men rob you with a pistol, some with a fountain pen."

Health Insurance Parasites: "Called 'Em Out!"

Even Politico caught the trick:
"PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the authors of AHIP's report, put out a statement last night that basically said, 'Hey, we weren't paid to evaluate the effects of the entire bill, but rather a small slice of it.' The statement only seems to reinforce critics' view that the report is skewed precisely because it doesn't take into account the totality of reform. PwC's report estimates that insurance premiums will rise faster under the proposed reforms than under the current system. The last, and key, line from the statement: 'If other provisions in health care reform are successful in lowering costs over the long term, those improvements would offset some of the impacts we have estimated.' In other words, PwC is saying if reform's cost containment measures work, their estimate could be wrong." [Politico, 10/13/09]

Rick "Good-Hair" Perry Sent Innocent Mant To Death

The worst thing about it was the guy was white.

Really. Texas has a long and bloody history of executions, both legal and para-military. It's usually okay to execute blacks, mexicans, asians, Indians, immigrants, and other undesireables. But they draw the line when the innocent victim is white. Hence the case of Cameron Todd Willingham, who was apparently executed mostly for having threatening tattoos, thereby mimicking an undesirable and ensuring his fate...

At Alternet, today:
By now you've probably heard of Cameron Todd Willingham, the Texas man who was executed in 2004 for supposedly setting a fire that killed his three young daughters. His conviction was based on junk science, prejudice, and wild allegations about his homicidal tendencies based on his tattoos (really). The arson investigation that sent Willingham to the death chamber has been thoroughly debunked by no fewer than six arson experts, leading to one inevitable conclusion: Texas killed an innocent man.

Not surprisingly, Texas Governor Pick Perry, who signed off on Willingham's execution despite alarming proof of his innocence, has gone to great length to suppress this story. In the past two weeks, Perry fired four members of the state Forensic Science Commission -- including its chairman -- 48 hours before it was scheduled to hold a critical hearing on the Willingham case. He has appointed a new Commissioner, John Bradley, a district attorney and "one of the state's most notorious tough-on-crime advocates," according to the Texas Observer. The investigation is now stalled until further notice.

Perry's moves reek of desperation, particularly given his upcoming bid for re-election. His top challenger, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, has seized on the Willingham case, simultaneously using it to discredit her opponent while reaffirming her own pro-death penalty stance. (She accuses Perry of providing "liberals" with ammunition against capital punishment.)

CNN and MSNBC have now picked up on the Willingham case, echoing some of the questions being raised by the local press. "Only the governor knows whether his motives were political, but these recent episodes have produced a pungent smell of politicization," wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram this week. "And the odor is nauseating."

Most recently, Perry has gone beyond backroom machinations to publicly restate his own belief in Willingham's guilt. "Willingham was a monster," he told reporters this week. He claims that there is "clear and compelling, overwhelming evidence that he was in fact the murderer of his children," even if their was no proof that the fire that killed them was set on purpose. But as Bob Moser recently wrote, "That makes so sense. If there was no arson, there was no crime, and Willingham was, by definition, innocent." (That, however, makes no difference as a matter of principal to the US Supreme Court. W.)

Rick Perry is running scared. But he can't hide. After signing off on more than 200 executions during his term -- a figure that makes one wonder how he sleeps at night -- it looks like one of them will be coming back to haunt him.
The last two Governors of Texas, between them, have sent more than 350 individuals (the Chimp killed 152, Perry more than 200) to their state-sponsored assassinations.

Anti-Abortionists: Rubbers --Not Laws-- Prevent Pregnancies

Via the Ear-To-The-Ground column at Truthdig, nobody would EVER have guessed that making condoms more accessible would reduce the number of abortions.

Really!
This isn’t going to sound all that shocking, but remember that this country is still wrapping its head around evolution: Criminalizing abortion does not reduce the number of abortions; it reduces the number of safe abortions. Contraception, however, does reduce abortions, according to an epic study of 197 countries.

The research was carried out by a pro-choice think tank, but you don’t have to be biased or even particularly clever to figure out that birth control prevents unwanted pregnancies and, therefore, abortions.

Guess what country, according to the BBC’s report on the study, has an abortion rate “among the highest in the developed world”? Hint: abstinence-only education. —PZS (From the BBC):
...Western Europe is held up as an example of what access to contraceptive services can achieve, and the Netherlands - with just 10 abortions per 1,000 women compared to the world's 29 per 1,000 - is held up as the gold standard.

Here, young people report using two forms of contraception as standard.

Even the UK, which has a relatively high rate, fares well in comparison to the US, where the number of abortions is among the highest in the developed world. The institute says this rate is in part explained by inconsistencies in insurance coverage of contraceptive supplies.

In much of eastern Europe, where abortion was treated as a form of birth control, abortion rates have dropped by 50% in the past decade as contraceptives have become more widely available.

And globally, the number of married women of childbearing age with access to contraception has increased from 54% in 1990 to 63% in 2003, with gains also seen among single, sexually active women.

But there were still significant unmet contraception needs, and a lack of interest among pharmaceutical companies in developing new forms of birth control that provide top protection on demand, the institute said.
Abortion: On Demand, no questions asked. The USer 'insurance reform' package is meaningless without provision to supply condoms and/or abortion-referral services...

Cops. All of them.

But especially those who want to engage the civilian population as spies against "terrorists."

Talk about an invitation to abuse! One of the reasons I support more regulation on ownership and possession of firearms is because I do not/cannot trust the vast majority of my fellow citizens not to be crazed, fearful, fully-armed assholes, instead of just loud, annoying, crazed and fearful un-armed assholes.

But the cops ALWAYS want more leverage over the people, and will do anything to gain more advantage. They claim additional police powers are no threat to freedom and democracy, but that is just patent, sparkling bullshit. From David Lindorff, via The Public Record:
Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton and other big city cops are calling for a new system of “citizen watch” programs, allegedly to help them spot hidden terrorists. I view this new call for a nation of private spies with a deep suspicion born of experience with the LAPD and its historic penchant for spying on law-abiding residents of that city.

Back in the late 1970s, together with a band of other doughty journalists, including Tommy Thompson, Ron Ridenour, Ben Pleasants, I co-founded and ran a spunky little news weekly called the LA Vanguard. In the course of just one year, we broke stories about secret “security offices” run by local phone companies (Pacific Telephone and GTE) which provided unlisted numbers and credit information to police and other government agencies without requiring a warrant, about the killing of unarmed citizens by police, about the LAPD’s “shoot to kill” gun use policy, about judges in landlord-tenant cases who were slumlords themselves, and many other stories that were being ignored by the LA Times and the rest of the local establishment media.

For our efforts, we found out years later, we were targeted by the LAPD’s “red squad,” known at the time as the Public Disorder Intelligence Division (PDID), for an intensive program of spying that including planting a young cop, Connie Milazzo, as a member of our editorial collective. We only learned of Milazzo’s real identity years later when she admitted disclosed it herself to a judge in a public hearing (she wanted to avoid being sent to the county lockup along with a group of activists she had “joined” undercover who had all been arrested during a protest and who were refusing to provide their identities to the court).

A subsequent lawsuit filed with the help of the ACLU of Southern California, eventually settled for a payment of $1.8 million by the City of Los Angeles, disclosed that the PDID had for years been using as many as 20 undercover cops to infiltrate and spy on over 200 legal political and activist organizations in the Los Angeles area, gathering rooms full of files on everyone from members of the National Organization for Women to the staffs of certain members of the city council.

We also learned that the LAPD was providing those files to a shadowy private outfit in San Francisco called Western Goals, which had links to the ultra-right John Birch Society. Western Goals was apparently seeking to serve as a private repository of dossiers on leftists and political activists collected by local police all around the country in a kind of end run around the restrictions on domestic spying by the FBI that had been imposed after the post-Watergate revelations about the abuses of the COINTELPRO era.

This is why Bratton’s idea stinks. Local police, because they are local, are even more prone to rogue activities that will never be exposed or monitored than are federal police.

Who lives by the sword...

Melanie Hain, the pistol-packing momma who attended her children's soccer games out there in the "Alabama" part of Pennsylvania--between Philly and Pittsburgh--wearing a side-arm, and whose permit was revoked by the local sheriff for sheer fucking arrogant, crass, dumb-ass, cracker stupidity, and who was therefore suing the sheriff for violation of her Second Amendment right, was one of two people involved in a murder-suicide yesterday. The other 'victim' was her gun-toting husband.

A Darwin Award contender, surely, if there ever were one...!

Unfortunately, she'd already bred. The kids were (physically) unharmed.

Wellpoint/Sandra Day O'Connor

Via ThinkProgress:
WellPoint, the largest health insurer in the United States which pays its CEO roughly $10 million, announced that it is cutting back on the health benefits it offers to its own employees. WellPoint also announced that it will eliminate some jobs at the company, while raising deductibles and premiums for some of its employee health benefits.
Pretty soon, there will be nothing 'civil' that can be done to these parasitic fuckers to remind them of their humanity than to cast their continued existence into doubt.

Meanwhile, that reeking, suppurating, miserable, feculent, venal, mendacious, running sore of a fucking slag, Sandra Day O'Connor, who INSTALLED the fucking Busheviks so that she wouldn't be replaced on the Court by a Dim president, now fucking REGRETS her replacements? What the FUCK!
As the Supreme Court begins a new term full of high-profile cases, retired justice Sandra Day O’Connor says she regrets that some of her decisions “are being dismantled” by the current, more conservative-leaning, court. “If you think you’ve been helpful, and then it’s dismantled, you think, ‘Oh, dear,’” she said. “But life goes on. It’s not always positive.”
I can only hope that this feculent bint suffers some same kinds of pains she SO CALLOUSLY AND SELFISHLY inflicted on the nation.

There are three "Ms" which are significant factors in the construction, accumulation and maintenance of electoral political capital: Money, Media, and Majority. If I could choose only two of the three, I'd take Money and Media.

Any meaningful "public option" is dead, by the way...There will be something that is called a "public option" for "thePrez" to sign, probably. But it will be so circumscribed, so limited, so encumbered with conditions, that it will be effectively neutered and useless...
